LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Police are investigating after an 11-year-old was killed, and five others were injured, in a northwest Indiana house fire late Tuesday night.

The Benton County Sheriff's Office said dispatch received a call about a house fire with a family trapped in the 2000 block of East 600 North in Benton County just before midnight Dec. 17.

First responders arrived and, with the help of local citizens, were able to use a ladder to get the family of six out of the burning home.

Police said the two parents and four children were taken to area hospitals for their injuries.

The Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office said one of the children, later identified as 11-year-old Yuliana Ortega Haro, died at IU Arnett Hospital on Wednesday, Dec. 18.

A forensic autopsy is currently being scheduled and will be performed at the Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office.

"Our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to the family, and we hope they are respected during such a difficult time," the coroner's office said.

This is an ongoing investigation with the Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office, Benton County Sheriff’s Office, Fowler Police Department and Indiana State Fire Marshall.
