KOKOMO (WTHR) - A man in police custody died while being processed into the Howard County Jail Friday night.

Kokomo police arrested 21-year-old Tavaris McGuire and two friends in a west side neighborhood. Now, police are trying to determine how McGuire died.

The 21-year-old was held on charges of possession of methamphetamine and dealing methamphetamine. Nearly a half-hour later, McGuire was inside the Howard County Justice Center. While being booked in to the jail, police say McGuire exhibited erratic behavior, including clutching his chest.

Medics arrived and took him to an area hospital, where he died.

A police department spokesperson did not believe McGuire had been stripped and searched.

McGuire's criminal history includes convictions for battery against a police officer, pointing a firearm, and a recent arrest for resisting law enforcement.

The coroner is awaiting toxicology test results to determine a cause of death.
