Police: 2 dead after crash involving 2 semis, car in Boone County

First responders said one truck may have crossed the highway's center line and collided with another truck.

BOONE COUNTY, Ind. — A head-on crash involving two semi tractor-trailers in western Boone County left two people dead Monday.

The accident happened on State Road 32, near County Road 700 West, around 8:10 p.m. Oct. 30. The scene is just east of Western Boone Junior-Senior High School, about seven miles west of Lebanon.

First responders were initially called to the intersection on a report of an explosion. When they arrived, the two trucks involved in the collision were on fire, a spokesperson said.

When the fire was extinguished, the drivers of each of the trucks were found to be dead, according to the spokesperson. 

In an update Oct. 31, the drivers were identified by police as 30-year-old Ranjeet Benipal, of Fresno, California, and 31-year-old Kevin Barrientos, of Indianapolis.

An SUV was damaged when it struck debris in the crash. No one in that vehicle was injured.

A team of crash investigators was called to the scene. Their investigation is ongoing.
