Police have identifed man killed, woman wounded in Avon shootings

A man was killed and a woman critically wounded in a shooting in an Avon neighborhood Monday afternoon.

AVON, Ind. (WTHR) - Police have identified the persons involved in Monday's shootings in Avon.

Police said the deceased male has been identified as 35-year-old William A. Schooley of Indianapolis and the female victim is Andrea R. Soberalski, 32, of Avon.

Police say the couple became involved in a dispute at Soberalski’s residence on Bluewood Way. During the dispute, Soberalski ran across the street to seek help. A witness told police that Schooley, armed with a handgun, approached Soberalski on the porch of a neighbor's home. Gunshots were then heard by witnesses and officers found the pair when they arrived.

"We had a female witness who was actually coming to the address to pick up a television on a purchase from an online transaction. And when she pulled up, she noticed the two individuals who sustained these gunshot wounds and called 911," said Avon Police Assistant Chief Brian Nugent.

Schooley was pronounced dead at the scene. Soberalski remains in critical condition at Eskenazi Health with at least two gunshot wounds. Police say only those two were involved in the shooting.

Police say the two victims were dating. A neighbor told Eyewitness News he saw about five police cars at the house they rented a few days ago and police confirmed at least one run to the home on a domestic case.

Neighbors say the couple lived in the rental house for the last couple months. Monday, when the shooting started just before 2:45 p.m., the pair ended up across the street in their neighbor’s property. The man found dead on the front lawn, the woman, in critical condition, on the front porch.

There were people home in that house where Soberalski was shot at the time of the shooting. It was unclear if the victim was trying to reach them for help when she collapsed on their porch.

David Becker, the father of the woman who lives in the house where the victims were found, said "anytime you hear that your daughter has an issue with the police, they are now in her neighborhood, you think, 'What the heck? What’s going on?"

His daughter, son-in-law and grandkids apparently didn't realize the shooting actually happened right outside their front door.

"They tell me the kids did not see anything they shouldn’t have seen, which is good," Becker said.

Brad Burnell, the father of the female homeowner, said, "as far as we're concerned, as long as the grandkids are okay - and the kids are okay - then we can wait."

"First thing I thought of was, 'What's going on? Something wrong with my house? My wife?'," said Art Botchis, who lives two doors down.

Botchis got home to find police tape strung from his front porch. His house was not involved in the shooting.

"Unfortunately, things like this happen. I am just happy it wasn't my house, but it's really unfortunate for the folks it does affect," he said.

Neighbors we talked to did not know the couple involved in the shooting. One neighbor told us he saw Soberalski out shoveling the walk on Saturday. They told us, as far as they know, no children lived at the house.
