Marion County - An Indianapolis police detective was bitten by a police dog Monday while trying to arrest a suspect.

The suspect led police on a five-mile chase. The chase began near 42nd and Pendleton Pike. The driver was suspected of drug activity. Now he's charged with fleeing a police officer and resisting arrest.

"Fortunately in this incident no one in the public was hurt. Actually, the only injury that occurred in this was while we were trying to apprehend the individual. One of our canines did bite one of our detectives. But we have no vehicle incidents and no civilian injuries," said Major Larry Jahnke, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

The detective is in stable condition with a bite wound to the leg. Once the driver was stopped, he ran from police. But he immediately surrendered when the police dogs arrived on the scene.

Police haven't released the name of the driver or the injured detective. Police found a gun and large amount of amount of money in the car.
