Police cracking down on drivers turning on red on Indy's north side

Despite signage all around the intersection, drivers continue to turn on red, authorities said.

INDIANAPOLIS — Bicyclists want drivers to watch out for them and posted road signs, especially where the Monon Trail connects with East 86th Street.

"They're not supposed to be making right-hand turns on red, and a lot of times, we see that happen," said Andrew Alvarado, who was biking.

And it happened just moments after that interview when a car nearly hit a bicyclist crossing the street. Suzanne Smock witnessed it, too, before she rode off.

"Well, it's really scary because you trust people are going to follow the rules and be aware of the bikers and walkers coming across, so I think it happens pretty regularly, so it's scary for us bikers and walkers," Smock said.

IMPD says despite all the signage around the intersection, drivers continue to turn on red. That's why people can expect to see more officers in the area.

"Pedestrians and cyclists are vulnerable, and drivers must be careful at this intersection for their safety," IMPD's Joseph Hockstra said.

Alvarado said he's been biking through the area for about 15 years. Now, he even brings his daughter, Alex, along. And while Alvarado appreciates the help from IMPD, he's hoping to see more safety measures brought to the intersection.

"Flashing lights would be a nice thing. Ultimately, cyclists and runners, I think we'd all love to see a bridge. We know that's expensive and that's probably far to come, but ultimately love to see something like that," Alvarado said.

IMPD is also asking those biking or crossing 86th Street to obey to street signs.
