INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - A polar bear that lived most of her life at the Indianapolis Zoo has died at the Detroit Zoo.
"Tundra" was moved to Detroit in June when Indianapolis closed its polar bear exhibit. Detroit's zoo is known as one of the leading polar bear facilities in the world with large spaces and pools, according to the Indianapolis Zoo.
Tundra was found to be seriously ill on Sunday. Veterinarians eventually made the decision to euthanize her on humanitarian grounds "to prevent further suffering." A full necropsy will be conducted, which is the animal version of an autopsy.
"We'd like to thank the Detroit Zoo for providing such a wonderful home and quality care for Tundra," the Indiapolis Zoo said in a Facebook post. At 29 years old, Tundra was one of the oldest polar bears in human care.
Tundra was born at the San Diego Zoo in November 1986, and came to Indianapolis in 1988 when the new Zoo opened.
