Pinewood Derby returns to State Museum

The official Pinewood Derby race will be Saturday, April 7.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — One of the Indiana State Museum's most popular events is back.

The Pinewood Derby returns Saturday, April 7. Homemade tiny cars will race down the two-story, 125-foot track as they compete to be the fastest cars. The Best in Show competition is also Saturday, awarding the car with the best design.

But if competition isn't for you, the museum also hosts fun runs to see how your car performs. Fun runs are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, April 6 and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 8.

Megan Mance with the State Museum said boy scouts from across the state to race their cars, and even people out of state will travel to get some practice on the track before their state's championships.

"It's pretty well-known in the Pinewood Derby world."

During fun runs, visitors can bring their own cars or race any of the ones the museum has on hand.

Mance said the museum staff get into the derby pretty seriously, and make many of the cars for visitors to race.
