GREENFIELD, Ind. (WTHR) — A pharmacist and an overnight clerk stopped a pharmacy robbery at a CVS in Greenfield on Nov. 26 just after midnight. The company fired both men for their actions.
The pharmacist, who does not want to be identified, says 22-year-old Jagger Maupin of Franklin came to the pharmacy counter and showed a note saying "This is a pharmacy robbery, give me all of your Oxycodone."
Instead, the pharmacist walked to the front doors of the store and told Maupin to show the note to clerk Zac Phillips. Phillips has posted the security video on his Facebook page.
"He lunges, hits the door, and we try to stop him. He starts fighting back, trying to scratch us, grab us. We were just trying to hold him down at this point," said Phillips.
Maupin tried to eat the robbery note, but police arrived in just over a minute and made him spit it out, thinking it might be drugs.
Maupin faces charges of pharmacy robbery, resisting law enforcement and theft.
CVS fired the pharmacist and Phillips and issued a statement that reads, in part, "We have stringent security policies and procedures in place to prohibit actions by employees that would jeopardize their safety and the safety of others. The actions of two employees at our Greenfield store during a recent attempted robbery violated those policies and procedures by initiating a physical confrontation."
"I'm upset that I lost our job for this, because we didn't try to stop him first. Once he made the first move, that's when we decided to do something," Phillips said.
The pharmacist says he chose to fight when Maupin touched him and turned his anger about the robbery attempt into action. But he says he knew he would be fired before the scuffle hit the ground.
"I did the right thing because he could have hurt somebody, hurt somebody else, hurt himself. Obviously if he's trying to rob a pharmacy, he's out to do something that night that's not good."
