INDIANAPOLIS — A push to speed up construction on a West Washington Street bridge has hit a major milestone.
A petition drive started back in August just reached 3,000 signatures.
It's calling on the city to prioritize and accelerate construction after the Indianapolis Department of Public Works announced the project's completion was pushed back to next summer.
The bridge over Little Eagle Creek has been closed for nearly eight months after the city realized the bridge was in worse shape than expected. Businesses say this extended closure is really hurting them.
"We just want them to continue to work. We don't want them to work a couple of weeks and then take another six months off. We want the bridge completed, cause it's hurting a lot of people. It's killing all these businesses around here. You can see there's no road with any traffic, so it's really hurting a lot of businesses around here," said George Krier, the petition's supervisor.
Now that the petition has reached over 3,000 signatures, the city now has to consider their request to speed up the project.
