BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY, Ind. — A person is dead after their truck drove off the road and into a lake in Bartholomew County Monday afternoon.

On July 22 around 3:45 p.m., the Bartholomew County Sheriff's Office, along with emergency personnel, responded to a truck partially submerged in a lake in the 800 block of West Old Nashville Road, near West State Road 46, west of Columbus.

A witness told police they saw the truck hit a mailbox on the north side of the road, then turn south, where the truck drove across a yard and through a home's carport.

Authorities said the truck caused "minor damage" to the carport before crashing off an elevated deck, then into a fence. The truck went down a hill across a lake side dock before stopping — partially submerged in the water.

Deputies said residents in the area went in the water to try and help the driver.

When emergency personnel arrived, the driver was removed from the vehicle. Medical aid was provided on scene, but the driver was pronounced dead.

The Bartholomew County Sheriff's Office believes the driver possibly suffered a medical episode, which resulted in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.
