54-year-old pedestrian killed in overnight crash on Indy's east side

The crash happened around 11:50 p.m. Tuesday at East 30th Street and Elmhurst Drive, near Shadeland Avenue.

INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD is investigating a deadly crash involving a pedestrian late Tuesday evening on the city's east side.

The crash happened around 11:50 p.m. Aug. 13 on East 30th Street at Elmhurst Drive, just east of Shadeland Avenue.

IMPD Capt. John Arvin told 13News officers were called to the intersection on a report of a pedestrian struck. When police arrived, they found 54-year-old Mirta Lopez down in the street.

Lopez was in critical condition when she was taken to an Indianapolis hospital. She died a short time later, police said.

IMPD said the driver of the vehicle that hit her remained on scene and was cooperative with detectives. Police said driver impairment is not believed to be a factor.

The spokesperson said there are no sidewalks in the immediate area, and it was very dimly lit Tuesday night.

No other injuries were reported from the incident, and police said the street was blocked from traffic for several hours during the investigation.
