Juvenile pedestrian in serious condition after being struck on Indy's east side

IMPD officers responded to the intersection of East Washington Street and South Kitley Avenue for the crash around 7:30 a.m.

INDIANAPOLIS — A juvenile pedestrian was struck and seriously injured on the east side of Indianapolis Wednesday morning.

Just before 7:30 a.m. June 26, IMPD officers responded to the 6600 block of East Washington Street, near Interstate 465, on a report of a pedestrian struck.

Officers believe the juvenile was crossing the street to get to a bus stop when they were hit by a vehicle. IMPD said the juvenile was taken to a local hospital in "serious but stable condition."

The bus belonged to charter school, Believe. 13News reached out to the school, which said the school bus had its stop sign extended and flashing lights working at the time of the crash.

Larry, a worker at the Skyline Motel just feet from where the crash happened, described the frantic moments he and his coworkers ran out after hearing the crash.

"We could see her on the ground. You could tell by the damage of the vehicle, she was hurt pretty bad," Larry said.

IMPD said the driver of the striking vehicle remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation. The driver was taken for a blood draw, which is standard procedure, and was later released pending further investigation.

Meanwhile, Larry said this stretch of the city is treated like a race track.

"It's just not safe to cross the street — for anybody out here," Larry said. "No one pays attention, they're on their cellphone, racing to go to work, racing to home home, whatever."

He has this message for drivers.

"Slow the hell down," Larry said.

This crash is under an ongoing investigation.
