Pedestrian critically injured in crash with IMPD car on Indy’s north side

The crash happened around 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Michigan Road and Double Tree Boulevard, near West 86th Street.

INDIANAPOLIS — One person was critically injured Sunday afternoon when they were struck by a police car on Indianapolis' north side.

The crash happened around 2:30 p.m. Sept. 15 on Michigan Road at Double Tree Boulevard, which is just south of West 86th Street.

"Preliminarily, investigators believe that the involved IMPD officer in a marked police vehicle was turning southbound onto Michigan Road from a parking lot when the pedestrian was struck," an IMPD spokesperson said in a statement. "Preliminarily, the pedestrian was believed to have been crossing the street from the west side of Michigan Road to the east when he was struck. "

The pedestrian, believed to be a man, was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

The officer was not injured.

The spokesperson said the officer will submit to toxicology tests, which is protocol in personal injury crashes.

Accident investigators and an IMPD Internal Affairs detective responded to the scene to begin separate investigations, which remain ongoing.
