Coroner: 58-year-old man dies after being hit by IMPD officer in marked car

The crash happened around 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Michigan Road and Double Tree Boulevard, near West 86th Street.

INDIANAPOLIS — A pedestrian struck by a marked IMPD car in mid-September has died, the Marion County Coroner's Office said Monday.

Rodney D. Huffman, 58, had been critically injured in the crash the afternoon of Sunday, Sept. 15.

The crash happened around 2:30 p.m. that day on Michigan Road at Double Tree Boulevard, which is just south of West 86th Street.

"Preliminarily, investigators believe that the involved IMPD officer in a marked police vehicle was turning southbound onto Michigan Road from a parking lot when the pedestrian was struck," an IMPD spokesperson said in a statement. "Preliminarily, the pedestrian was believed to have been crossing the street from the west side of Michigan Road to the east when he was struck."

Huffman was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. He was pronounced dead on Sept. 21.

The officer was not injured.

An IMPD spokesperson said the officer would submit to toxicology tests, which is protocol in personal injury crashes.

Accident investigators and an IMPD Internal Affairs detective responded to the scene to begin separate investigations, which remain ongoing.
