'Peace Walk' held on Indy's near north side calls for an end to gun violence

Organizers say they're trying to get the message out before the start of summer to show teens that there are people who care and want to help.

INDIANAPOLIS — Dozens of young people gathered on the near north side on Saturday to call for an end to gun violence in Indianapolis.

The Marion County Youth Violence Coalition partnered with several other groups to host a peace walk on Indy's near north side in honor of National Youth Violence Prevention Week.

The walk began at the Landmark for Peace Memorial on 17th Street.

According to organizers, the walk is meant to highlight future peacemakers who already are helping to make their communities safer.

"We want to see less and less people in our city being shot," said one participant. "But also bringing all of these organizations together. The collaboration, village that it takes to truly reduce gun violence and see a change, doing something like this helps that out."
