INDIANAPOLIS — Friday marks one year since Indiana State Police Trooper Aaron Smith was killed in the line of duty.
On June 28, 2023, Smith was trying to stop a stolen vehicle that was leading police on a chase.
Smith stepped out of his vehicle to deploy stop sticks when he was hit and killed by the suspect.
Two men are now facing charges in Smith's death.
Eddie Jones, the man who police say was driving the stolen 2016 Chevrolet Traverse, is charged with murder, resisting law enforcement and auto theft.
Jones is due back in court in December. His jury trial is scheduled for January 2025 in Hendricks County.
A passenger in the vehicle, DeMareon Curry, received the maximum sentence of 2.5 years for his guilty plea of resisting law enforcement.
Both Jones and Murray are from Sikeston, Missouri.
At Smith's funeral, hundreds of friends, family and community members gathered in Johnson County to remember the fallen trooper.
Smith also received military honors after serving as a sergeant in the Indiana National Guard.
Trooper Aaron Smith left behind his wife, Megan. He was 33 years old.
