On National Day Without Child Care, advocates seek to raise awareness of affordability, provider wages

The cost of child care has skyrocketed and is typically the second largest household expense for families.

INDIANAPOLIS — Parents and child care providers are raising awareness about child care affordability.

Monday is National Day Without Child Care, a campaign that also raises awareness about the need for better pay for educators and providers.

Little Feet Academy in Johnson County is a faith-based day care center, taking care of our youngest Hoosiers. Workers there say this impacts everyone.

"I think it would bring a lot of awareness to the wages that are paid to a lot of the staff that work in preschool and day cares," Little Feet's Kelly McBride said. "They're paid substantially lower wages a lot of times than other occupations, and they're doing one of the most important jobs in the world."

According to Indeed.com, child care providers in Indiana make an average of $14 per hour.
