INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — The oldest survivor of the attack on the USS Indianapolis during World War II has died.
According to the official USS Indianapolis Facebook page, Jim Jarvis died Saturday. There are now only nine living survivors of the attack.
The USS Indianapolis was sunk by a Japanese Navy submarine in July 1945. Around 300 people went down with the ship. The remaining 890 faced dehydration and shark attacks while stranded out in the ocean.
In addition to Jarvis being a kind man with a warm heart and friendly smile, USS Indianapolis said he was the only one who could pull off a "USS Indianapolis Swim Team" shirt with shark-print shorts.
