Weekend officer-involved shooting on Indy's west side under investigation

It started with a traffic stop around 2 a.m. Saturday in the 5100 block of W. Washington St.

INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis Metro police confirm the investigation of an officer-involved shooting early Saturday morning.

It happened around 2 a.m. on West Washington Street just east of Lynhurst Drive.

According to an IMPD account, a uniformed officer in a marked police vehicle conducted a traffic stop in the 5100 block of West Washington Street. 

Detectives say after the vehicle pulled into the Kroger parking lot, a man in the vehicle ran away from the traffic stop with the officer chasing him on foot.

Both the 31-year-old male suspect, who has since been identified by IMPD as Denny Mattingly, and the IMPD officer, fired shots. Mattingly was struck at least once, according to IMPD. Police rendered first aid, then medics took Mattingly to the hospital in stable condition. 

The officer was not injured.

Detectives recovered a gun in the area.

The woman who was driving the vehicle during the traffic stop cooperated with police and was later released.

Mattingly had an active warrant for possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, residential entry, resisting law enforcement and a community corrections violation. He was arrested after he was released from the hospital Saturday morning on the outstanding warrant, as well as a preliminary charge of attempted battery with a deadly weapon. 

The IMPD Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) is conducting the criminal investigation. 

The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will make a charging determination based on gathered evidence. 

A separate administrative investigation is being conducted by IMPD Internal Affairs.

The officer, 4-year-veteran Randall Burns, was wearing a body camera, and police say it was was recording during the incident. 

Burns is now on administrative leave as of standard procedure in police shootings.
