SOUTH BEND - University of Notre Dame officials say the evacuation of the football stadium during severe weather was successful and that it avoided any injuries among the 80,000 fans.
Notre Dame spokesman Dennis Brown tells WSBT-TV that the decision to evacuate the stadium during Saturday's game was made when lightning strikes came within about 10 miles. He says university officials will meet Tuesday to review what was the first-ever evacuation of the stadium.
Brown says the deadly stage collapse last month at the Indiana State Fair and last year's death of a student videographer at Notre Dame football practice didn't factor into the evacuation decision.
WNDU-TV reports that hundreds of fans packed nearby restaurants during the halftime evacuation.
