INDIANAPOLIS — The Marion County Prosecutor is charging nine people after street takeovers caused fiery mayhem in Indianapolis on Sept. 15 and 16.

“The recent street takeovers not only place the public in unnecessary danger but those participating in these events,” Prosecutor Ryan Mears said. “Law enforcement is working to keep our city safe and the actions toward them are simply unacceptable. We will continue to take these cases seriously and pursue criminal consequences for those involved in these types of events.”

The first takeovers of the weekend started on Saturday, Sept. 14, the prosecutor said. Officers saw more than 100 cars taking part.

On Sunday and Monday, police were attacked by groups of people when they tried to break up other street takeovers. Police say men with baseball bats threw cans of gas and oil at them. Several IMPD cruisers had their windshields smashed. No officers were seriously injured.

"Our officers responded to calls regarding street takeovers and spinning, and in doing so, they were met with violence," IMPD Chief Chris Bailey said. "Let me be clear: we will not tolerate any behavior that puts officer safety or the safety of our community at risk."
