Next generation of storytellers share works at Arsenal Tech event

Several poems read Wednesday were recognized for various creative writing awards.

INDIANAPOLIS — "So in this cocoon, I create the one thing I want. Within that immersion, I grew my wings. I became hope."

Those were the words Wednesday from one of the next generation of storytellers from Indianapolis Public Schools.

Student writers from the school district showcased their poems and literary works at an event at Arsenal Tech High School.

Community members, parents and mentors came out to show their support. IPS said the event fosters artistic expression and offers a platform for young voices to shine.

"It's always been a dream of mine to be able to do this kind of work and to really amplify those students voices, see them grow their confidence, see them go into the world," said Chris Speckman, coordinator of the IPS writing center.

Several poems read Wednesday were also recognized for various creative writing awards.

"I try to always look at it as if somebody's going to relate to it and it can possibly help them in some sort of way," said Timothy Scates-Hoover, a high school junior.
