New zoo exhibit offers rare up-close look at 29 long-tailed macaques

29 of them live here and all of them are curious to explore their new surroundings and meet you!

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - You may have seen social media posts about "the Indy monkeys" and wondered what it was all about.

We can finally tell you it's part of a new exhibit at the Indianapolis Zoo.

They're long-tailed macaques, and these monkeys don't just stay on land. Even though they weren't doing it today, they swim and dive in the water too.

29 of them live here and all of them are curious to explore their new surroundings and meet you!

"We will be doing, this summer starting Memorial Day, three chats each day that we hope the monkeys will start to swim during those," said Michelle Shaw, the zoo's primate area manager. "We will have the macaques out every day that will be visible for everyone to see."

You can check them out starting this weekend in the oceans area of the zoo. It's the only spot where you can see them up-close in all of North America.
