New bridge replaces broken bridge damaged by car crash in 2021 on Indy's northeast side

The bridge was blocked off with cement barricades for years, preventing students walking to and from James and Rosemary Phalen Leadership Academy safely.

INDIANAPOLIS — A broken pedestrian bridge on the northeast side of Indianapolis has at long last been replaced.

The pedestrian walkway that travels over a small creek on Mitthoefer Road, just north of 42nd Street, has been replaced. The replacement comes after a truck flipped over the guardrail and landed on the bridge in August 2021.

In a social media post by the Indianapolis Department of Public Works, Indy DPW showed off new photos of the replacement bridge and thanked their contractor, F.A. Wilhelm Construction, for their work on the bridge.

The bridge's opening comes just in time for the new school year. James and Rosemary Phalen Leadership Academy students return to school Aug. 15.
