New market tax credits to benefit Indianapolis neighborhoods, historic landmark

The city of Indianapolis is going to put $40 million in tax credits toward several big projects that could change some neighborhoods.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) – The city of Indianapolis is going to put $40 million in tax credits toward several big projects that could change some neighborhoods.

This is all part of the $55 million in new market tax credits that Mayor Hogsett announced at his state of the city.

The money from the federal government will go to the Madam Walker Legacy Center and Theatre, the Wheeler Mission Women and Children's Center, the 16 Tech Citizen's Shop and Recycle Force's new location on the northeast side.

The Madam Walker Legacy Center was built in 1927. It's been renovated over the years but the center's president says this new money is going to help them transform it.

"And now in 2019, 2020, we're going to come to a brand new building," said Judith Thomas, Madam Walker Legacy Center President. "A building with windows, a building with open spaces, with sunlight and new event space. So we're very excited and it means a lot that the community and Indianapolis in general is supporting this incredible project."

The Madam Walker Legacy Center's president says this money will also help them take their programming to the next level.
