INDIANAPOLIS — We're getting our first look at the new $23 million family center at Frederick Douglass Park on the near northeast side of Indianapolis.
It's a project that took about two years to finish near East 25th Street and Ralston Avenue.
The facility includes a gym, community rooms and exercise rooms — and even a room where people can record podcasts.
Outside the new center, there's a playground and picnic shelter. The improvements are being called a welcome change.
"I truly believe the heart of Martindale-Brightwood will be stronger than ever in this revitalized place," said Kenyatta Moore, assistant park manager.
Neighbor Beatrice Strong agreed.
"I'm going to bring my grandkids and all the kids in my neighborhood so they can enjoy this wonderful building," Strong said.
When the park first opened in 1921, it was a product of segregation. On Thursday, the city marked a new era with the grand reopening and said it was just the start.
The project was part of the Circle City Forward Initiative. Besides the Douglass Park improvements, the initiative invests $11 million in upgrades to Riverside Regional Park and $7 million at both Grassy Greek Park and Krannert Park.
Resident Jeffrey Briggs likes the revamp.
"We just had a couple of swings back in the day, and now this is really nice," Briggs said.
There's more coming to the park, with plans to redo the athletic fields and the outdoor basketball court. The city hopes it becomes a park and center for all generations to enjoy.
