New details released in downtown parking garage incident

Two people are dead after a car fell from the fourth floor of a parking garage and landed on its top Wednesday.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — Two people are dead after a car fell from the fourth floor of a parking garage and landed on its top Wednesday.

The victims were identified Thursday morning as Charles Hunt, 73, and ​Iristeen Hunt, 70 from University Park, Illinois, which is south of Chicago. The coroner said they died from multiple blunt force trauma.

The black 2013 Lincoln SUV landed in an alley behind City Market just before 10 a.m. Wednesday. Marion County EMS, IMPD and IFD responded to the incident. IMPD will treat the incident as an accidental death investigation.


According to IMPD Captain Chris Bailey, the SUV was traveling south on the third floor of the parking garage when, for an unknown reason, it struck the back left corner of another unoccupied vehicle, traveling 20 feet before it hit the parking garage wall and fell to the ground.

Eyewitness News learned from family that Charles Hunt drove for Chicago Transit Authority for 30 years.

Hunt has three children from a previous marriage which includes a daughter and two sons.

Family who spoke with Eyewitness News did not know why the couple was visiting Indianapolis.

Timeline of events

According to the Indianapolis Fire Department, this is a timeline of events related to the incident.

9:50 a.m. - Crews are dispatched to the 222 E. Market Street.

9:54 a.m. - First unit arrives and finds the 2013 black Lincoln on its top.

9:55 a.m. - Female driver is located in the vehicle and pronounced dead two minutes later.

10:03 a.m. - Parking garage staff advised to close the garage.

10:21 a.m. - Adult male is located in the car and pronounced dead five minutes later.

11:17 a.m. - Female victim is removed from the car.

11:24 a.m. - Car is flipped onto wheels.

11:49 a.m. - Male victims is removed from the car.

11:54 a.m. - Primary and secondary searches completed.
