INDIANAPOLIS — A woman is expected to be alright after she drove her car into a pond on the northwest side of Indianapolis early Thursday morning. Several neighbors came to her rescue.
13News spoke to the couple who helped pull her out of the water.
"You know the screech of tires when there's about to be an accident. So, I looked out our window. The car hit the curb and went careening into the water," Becca Baker said.
Baker and Matthew Simmons heard the noise around 2 a.m. April 4.
The woman drove her car into the pond near West 62nd Street and Georgetown Road.
"It didn't really hit me until the submerged vehicle and someone flailing that I spring into action," Simmons said.
Simmons jumped the fence and into the cold water that he estimates was more than 12 feet deep.
"As he was grabbing her was when the vehicle went 75% submerged to all the way down. So, we're yelling at her from the bank, 'is there anyone else in the car?' I mean, that's just what we kept yelling over and over again, and all she said as we were getting her out was, 'no,'" Baker said.
Simmons helped the woman out of the water.
"She did 90% of the work. I just pushed her to the finish line to the bank," Simmons said.
First responders arrived to check the woman out.
Now, the couple just keeps thinking about that woman they helped.
"We didn't get a lot of sleep in our house last night, but we've been thinking about her all day. Looking up the story, trying to see if there was anything. So our friend who lives in Speedway, we hope she's OK," Baker said.
The Pike Township Fire Department told 13News the driver is expected to be OK. It's still unclear why she went into the water.
Another neighbor told 13News this is the third driver to go into the pond in the last year.
