FISHERS, Ind. (WTHR) - It's National Walk to School Day, but the event takes on a special meaning for students at Cumberland Road Elementary School.
The fourth grade class along with their parents walked to school and raised money for a good cause.
They took part in the Iron Giraffe Challenge for the nonprofit "Water for South Sudan."
All the walkers were asked to make a donation. The idea actually came from students.
"A book that we read called A Long Walk to Water, all the fourth graders read that book and were really inspired and moved and motivated to do something about the crisis worldwide of people not having access to clean water," said David Greiwe, a fourth grade teacher.
"There's this boy in South Sudan and they just have to walk several miles just to get water and it's not clean," said student Leila Rozema. Classmate Grace Jackson added "and they can get really sick by drinking dirty water."
They also carried one-gallon jugs of water that will be given to a local service organization.
The class raised about $1,000.
