MUNCIE, Ind. — The City of Muncie is one step closer to getting not one, not two, but three Designated Outdoor Refreshment Areas.
The Muncie City Council officially approved the creation of three DORAs, the city announced Thursday, Nov. 14, describing the measure as "aimed at enhancing local tourism, supporting small businesses, and promoting a vibrant, social atmosphere in key districts."
The DORAs will be located in downtown Muncie, Ball State University Village and McKinley. They will allow people to legally carry and consume alcoholic drinks in certain outdoor public spaces in those three areas.
“These designated areas provide an opportunity to enhance outdoor dining and entertainment options, helping our city continue to grow as a vibrant, welcoming destination," Muncie Mayor Dan Ridenour said in a statement.
The city said each area will be clearly marked with signage, and patrons will be required to follow rules regarding hours of operation, permitted beverage types and other guidelines.
"In addition, the City Council has worked closely with local business owners, law enforcement, and community leaders to ensure the initiative’s success and minimize any potential public safety concerns," the city said in a statement.
The Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission will need to approve the plans before the DORAs can become fully operational.
