Motorists will see variable speed limits starting Tuesday on parts of I-465

The standard speed is 55 miles per hour, but depending on the situation, the limit could be reduced to as low as 35 miles per hour.

INDIANAPOLIS — Starting Tuesday, you could see speed limits as low as 35 miles per hour along a stretch of Interstate 465 between I-65 and I-70 on Indianapolis' southeast side.

Professional driver Lloyd Godby said the result could be what he would like to see on the road.

"Less accidents, less problems on the road, less delay in time," Godby said, who has been driving a truck for 24 years.

INDOT spokesperson Kyleigh Cramer said they hope the new variable speed limits will help with that. She said they've been in place for some time, but they're going live Tuesday.

"If we see an accident or inclement weather or things of that nature, it's going to lower the speed limit at five miles per hour increments, or it will stay at 55 miles per hour," she said.

The standard speed is 55 miles per hour, but depending on the situation, the limit could be reduced to as low as 35 miles per hour.

"It's all really working together hand in hand to ensure one's safety and also slowing down the speed we are seeing in this area," said Cramer.

Godby thinks it could be a good thing. He's driven trucks all over the country and has seen variable speed limits work other places.

"I have been in areas that have that, depending on the traffic, to slow people down. I think that will be good," said Godby.

But he said that's not the only problem he sees.

"It's the speed, yes, but it's people not paying attention," Godby said. "That's the big problem."

He hopes drivers being aware the speed could change at anytime will make people more alert.

Police will be enforcing the posted speed limits.
