Dog dies in northeast Indianapolis house fire; child, firefighter injured

The fire happened around 2:15 p.m. Feb. 29 in the 6100 block of East 40th Street, near 42nd Street and North Arlington Avenue.

INDIANAPOLIS — A mother and four children are without their home and their dog after a Thursday afternoon fire.

According to the Indianapolis Fire Department, around 2:15 p.m. on Feb. 29, firefighters responded to a working residence fire in the 6100 block of East 40th Street, near 42nd Street and North Arlington Avenue.

Firefighters arrived to see heavy smoke and fire coming from the home and made an "aggressive attack" on the blaze, getting it under control in 15 minutes with assistance from the Lawrence Fire Department.

One of the children and a firefighter were taken to IU Methodist Hospital for minor injuries, officials said. IFD also said the family's dog, Nova, did not survive the fire, the cause of which is under investigation.
