SHELBY COUNTY, Ind. (WTHR) - Monday marks 50 years since a horrific plane crash in Shelby County.
83 people died after the mid-air collision.
The Allegheny Airlines plane came crashing down into a field, killing everyone on board.
The Shelby County Historical Society shared photos with us of the original crash site.
There were reports at the time that radar was weak in the area where the crash happened.
There has been a public memorial service every year since the tragedy. We're told more than 100 people showed up Monday, including the family of Captain James Elrod, the pilot.
The group commissioned a monument at the crash site which reads, in part, "Out of this tragedy rose a new era of aviation safety and technology. May the lives that are gone never be forgotten."
