BROAD RIPPLE, Ind. (WTHR) — An Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Sergeant is on medical leave while he recovers after accidentally shooting himself in the leg early Friday morning.

Sgt. Dean Fisher told medics he shot himself by accident as he was cleaning his gun in his personal car while it was parked on Broad Ripple Avenue. The strange part of the story is the fact that the self-inflicted shooting happened when Sgt Fisher was working part-time. Fisher was working off-duty security in Broad Ripple at the time of the shooting, according to Eyewitness News sources.

Sgt. Fisher was taken to IU Health-Methodist Hospital for treatment and should make a full recovery from the shooting. He will have to be cleared by his doctor before he can return to full time to his supervisory position at IMPD.

Chief Bryan Roach just recently announced a number of promotions to the rank of sergeant because they needed more supervisors on the street in every district.

The Internal Affairs Division at IMPD is now investigating the shooting. Part of the investigation will include looking to see if Fisher violated any department rules known as general orders by cleaning a gun while working off duty.

Eyewitness News searched the IMPD database for the incident report of the accidental shooting, but could not find any filed under Sgt. Dean Fisher's name.
