MCCORDSVILLE, Ind. — The 108th Running of the Indy 500 is just nine days away, but one local school held its own version of the race Friday.
McCordsville Elementary hosted its ninth "Kindy 500" this morning.
Kindergarten students got to decorate their cardboard cars before racing for the championship title and, of course, enjoyed the traditional sip of milk at the finish line.
Teachers say it's a fun way to teach kids about their home state.
"The kids just enjoy doing their boxes because it shows their personalities," said teacher Courtney Treon. "They can do anything they want to their box and they just enjoy getting out here and running and just celebrating."
And similar to the big race, this one started with a parade - through school halls - and a police escort to the track.
Paul Page, longtime voice of the Indianapolis 500, served as announcer for Friday's event. Several 500 Festival princesses handed out awards.
