INDIANAPOLIS — We are learning more about the next steps in the city's push to bring a Major League Soccer team to Indianapolis.
On Monday, Mayor Joe Hogsett said another big hurdle should be cleared in a couple days. He tells 13News the Metropolitan Development Commission will meet this Wednesday.
The city will will then finalize their push to get a team here and build a soccer-specific stadium, according to Hogsett.
That doesn't mean the process is a done deal.
The plan then goes to the state for consideration from the budget committee.
At the mayor's breakfast for Indiana Black Expo Summer Celebration Monday, Hogsett made it clear he will not build a soccer complex without an MLS team.
"I want to make it clear to the people of Indianapolis, I am not Bill Hudnut and we're not going to build a football stadium without a team. We will build a soccer-specific stadium If and only if MLS wants to bring a club to Indianapolis," said Hogsett.
The mayor also said the state needs to approve the plan before the city will apply to the MLS for a club and franchise.
