Martinsville coach arrested after park incident

The Martinsville School District is tight-lipped following the arrest of its basketball coach who was caught half-naked in Eagle Creek Park with a 17-year-old girl.

A central Indiana teacher and long time boys basketball coach resigned from Martinsville High School Monday after his arrest Sunday at Eagle Creek Park for indecent exposure.

An Indianapolis Metro Police officer said he caught 65-year-old Timothy Wolf with a 17-year-old girl.

Wolf was recently awarded for 300 basketball wins in his 25 years as head coach at Martinsville High School.

Now it's a criminal record, alleging he was caught half naked in a car with the girl that has the town of Martinsville in an uproar.

"I would be heartbroken," said Tammy Hanna of Martinsville, thinking of the 17-year-old's parents.

"It's a sad day in Martinsville. I just hope the end result will prove to be something more than what we're heard," said Martinsville Mayor Phil Deckard Sr.

Sunday afternoon, an IMPD officer on patrol at Eagle Creek park in Indianapolis says he saw "suspicious movements" from Wolf's car, parked 30 feet from a playground area.

When the officer walked up to the car, he said "he could then see Wolf's pants unzipped," and Wolf was exposed.

In court records, the officer said, "I arrested Wolf for public nudity" and enhanced the charge because it was inside a city-owned and operated public park and 30 to 40 feet from a playground.

Wolf was released from jail at 7:55 Monday morning.

At Martinsville High School, where Wolf worked as a health teacher, the school's principal refused to come out from his office to address the developments

After school, police and school staff kept watch as traffic spilled from the lot.

Downtown community members expressed disgust and disappointment.

"I think it's going to devastate a lot of the kids and parents who trusted him. He was supposed to be a mentor. It's horrible," said Martinsville resident Debbie Connor.

"He's been a stellar person here. He was a businessman as well as a coach. So a lot of sentiment, a lot of sadness," added Mayor Deckard.

"It used to be our children were safe at schools and used to be able to go to our teachers. Anymore, you can't trust, and it's disheartening," said Tammy Hanna.

Martinsville School District's superintendent released a statement late Monday afternoon, saying the district learned of the arrest today, and that Wolf notified the school that he will retire effective immediately.

Superintendent Dr. Ron Furniss went on to say: "I have authorized an immediate internal investigation focused on gathering the facts. The Metropolitan School District of Martinsville also plans to fully cooperate with law enforcement during its investigation."

According to records at the Indiana Department of Education, Wolf has a reported salary of $63,941 with a supplemental salary of $13,800.
