Marion County youth advocacy groups distributing free gun lock boxes

They'll be distributed at MCCOY on West 16th Street Monday through Friday.

INDIANAPOLIS — Gun owners in Indianapolis can get free lock boxes this week to help keep their families safe.

The Marion County Youth Violence Prevention Coalition and the Marion County Commission on Youth are providing the free gun locks. They'll be available at the MCCOY building, located at 1375 W. 16th St., from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Indianapolis saw a sharp rise in unintentional shootings involving children last year. Secure gun storage is an easy way to prevent injury and death, especially since kids are innately curious.

"Instead of relying on kids to make smart, intelligent – not impulsive – decisions, we can put them in space that's safer and so we don't just have to tell them 'hey, don't touch this thing that's really interesting,' but we can just kind of take that away from them so they don't put themselves in a position that's really dangerous," MCCOY's Rebecca McCracken said.
