Marian University honoring cycling champion Marshall 'Major' Taylor

Marshall "Major" Taylor broke boundaries by becoming the first African-American cycling champion more than 100 years ago.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - An Indianapolis legend is getting more recognition.

Marshall "Major" Taylor broke boundaries by becoming the first African-American cycling champion more than 100 years ago.

So Marian University honored him at Thursday night's race at his namesake venue, the Major Taylor Velodrome.

After all these years, his great-granddaughter is still thankful for all the support.

"The attention has remained focused on Major Taylor, especially in Indiana and the city of Indianapolis. People couldn't be more kind and they honor his memory every day when they just take a look at this exit and see the velodrome in the distance."

On Friday, the Indiana Historical Bureau will re-dedicate a historical marker at the intersection of 28th Street and the Monon Trail.

Taylor set a one-mile record at Capital City Track in Indianapolis in 1895 and won his first professional race in December 1896.
