Flash flood warnings expire; more rain on the way next week

Central Indiana residents weary from this week's severe weather can't seem to catch a break.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Central Indiana residents weary from this week's severe weather can't seem to catch a break.

After heavy rains led to flooding on numerous Indianapolis streets Friday evening, Marion County is once again under a flash flood warning. The warning was in effect until 2:15 pm Saturday but there were no reports of severe flooding.

Friday night's flooding left dozens of drivers stranded after they drove through high water.

The rain started heavy Friday night and all at once on the southeast side of Indianapolis. There was intense lightning, too.

The torrential rain quickly overflowed the rain gutters at a church off Southeastern Ave. near Minnesota. The lightning subsided, but the rain came on for over 20 minutes.

It quickly made a lake out of Southeastern and Prospect. Cars generated waves twice their size as they crashed through the flooded roadway.

Then under the old railroad overpass near Southeastern and Sherman, there was danger. A car seemed to sink in the water underneath the overpass. After sitting on the back of the car, the driver walked to dry land as passersby slowed to see if they could help.

Once Haley Steele drove her SUV into the water, she was in trouble.

"I just drove through it in my car, stopped, and then it started swerving or whatever and water just filling up. So I had to kick my door and get out and swim away," she said. "I had to kick it and kick it hard. The current is coming this way. Thank God I didn't have my daughter in the car, she's only one-and-a-half. She would've freaked out. I would've freaked out."

She was eventually able to make it to safety and reach out for help.

The Indianapolis Indians baseball game has been postponed until September 1. As the scheduled game time neared, water covered the field at Victory Field. Pitcher Trevor Williams tweeted a picture and video, showing the high water wasn't limited to the diamond:

Despite the heavy flooding, once the clouds cleared the University of Indianapolis tweeted a beautiful picture from Victory Field.

The Symphony on the Prairie concert at Conner Prairie and the concert at Klipsch Music Center headlined by Hank Williams Jr. were delayed, but eventually got underway.

As of 7pm, the problem spots included 11th and Meridian, 22nd and Illinois, 52nd and Meridian, 10th and Sherman, 23rd and Penn, and streets in Fountain Square.

One driver tells WTHR that Washington St. on the Indianapolis west side is flooded, especially near the train bridge at Rockville Road. Cars are getting stuck in the water at Washington Boulevard and Fall Creek Parkway.

Drivers are reporting the Delaware St. is also flooded as of 7pm.

There was also flooding in the Castleton Square Mall parking lot.
