Man struck, killed by on-duty IMPD officer on Indy's southwest side

Police say an on-duty IMPD officer was traveling northbound on Kentucky Avenue and approaching Lynhurst Drive when he struck a pedestrian.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — A man was killed Sunday night after being hit by an IMPD patrol car on the city's southwest side.

Officers were alerted to a person struck just after 11 p.m. on Kentucky Avenue near Lynhurst Drive.

An IMPD spokesperson said officer Conrad Simpson was on patrol, traveling northbound on Kentucky Avenue and approaching Lynhurst Drive when he struck the pedestrian along the street.

Simpson is a 19-year veteran of IMPD. The victim has not yet been identified.

According to police, Simpson immediately gave first aid, but medics pronounced the man dead at the scene.

In compliance with state law, the officer submitted to a blood draw, which is standard procedure for anyone involved in a fatal crash.

Investigators don't believe Simpson was intoxicated at the time of the crash. Police said poor visibility due to the weather conditions may have been a factor in the crash.
