Man hospitalized in serious condition following near east Indianapolis building fire

The fire happened near 10th and North Rural streets around 8 a.m. Monday.

INDIANAPOLIS — A man was taken to a hospital in serious condition after a building fire on Indianapolis' near east side Monday morning.

Crews responded to a building in the 2800 block of East 10th Street, near North Rural Street, shortly before 8 a.m. March 3 for reports of a fire.

Firefighters had challenges getting into the building, which is both a business and a residence. Firefighters found a man in his 30s in the basement who was semi-conscious due to smoke inhalation, Indianapolis Fire Department Battalion Chief Rita Reith told 13News.

When firefighters got into the building, they located a trash fire on the first floor and heard the man yelling for help. Firefighters were able to get the man out, and he was taken to a local hospital in serious condition.

Neighbors told IFD that the man lives in the building on the second floor and must have gone to the basement when his exits were blocked.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
