Man sentenced for theft of 'Gus' the skateboarding bulldog

Reid Albrecht will spend at least a year on work release, pay restitution and detail what happened to Gus.

CARMEL (WTHR) — The man who stole Gus the skateboarding bulldog, won't have to spend even one day in prison.

Instead, Reid Albrecht will go into the Hamilton County Community Corrections work release program for two years.

If after a year he has not had any violations, he can be placed on home detention with electronic monitoring.

Albrecht will also have to pay $4,280 dollars to Gus' owner and detail what happened to Gus after he stole him. Albrecht had said to his father that he would buy the family a new dog, so it has not been clear what happened to Gus.

The family's bulldog went missing in October of 2017.

The family launched a wide-ranging search with signs and a facebook page. It was in April of this year that a break in the case came.

Prosecutors assert that in a phone call, recorded in the Hamilton County jail while held on unrelated charges, Albrecht asked his father to go to the victim's residence and tell them that it was he that stole the dog. He reportedly is recorded saying he would buy them another dog and went on to say he 'cannot go another day seeing the sign about the dog.'
