Man provides weekly woodworking projects for kids

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — Are your kids running out of activities? They aren't running out in one south side neighborhood, thanks to one man who's been leaving weekly woodworking projects at the end of his driveway for kids to take for free.

David Haughs started doing this four weeks ago. On the first week, he left pieces of wood out for kids to make flower boxes. The follow weeks, he left what was needed to make bird houses, a bubble gum dispenser and finally, a squirrel feeder. He records videos with instructions on how to make them and posts those videos on a Facebook page he created called Socially Distant Woodworking Projects.

"[It's great for] people trapped in their houses with nothing else to do," Haughs said. "Here, they can come grab these, and we keep our distance, and I get to see them smile and talk to them for a little bit from a distance. It brightens my day, and it seems to brighten others' days too."

Over the last four weeks, kids and parents have taken 650 kits from his driveway to build.

"It's given kids the opportunity to get off the computer," Haughs said. "[There are] a lot of pictures of kids outside putting these together with their parents for a little bit of industrial arts. The other great thing to see too is families getting to spend some time together, parents helping their kids, grandparents helping their grandchildren — a lot of people smiling and having fun."

Haughs announces his new project each Sunday at 9 a.m. If you're interested in getting the special one for Mother's Day, contact him on Facebook.

All of this is made possible thanks to donations and help from Home Depot.
