INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Metro Police say a man lost part of his leg in a motorcycle crash Sunday night on South Madison Avenue.

Officers spotted the 35-year-old man doing "wheelies" on Madison around 8:00 p.m. and began following him. That's when they say the man sped away near Madison and Troy Avenue and the first officer elected to not pursue him at high speed.

Moments later, another officer coming from the other direction found the man off his bike, crashed near Madison and Southern Avenue.

One of the rider's legs was severed at the knee, and police say medics took him away in an ambulance in critical condition, along with the limb in hopes it could be reattached.

Police have not released the rider's name.
