Man in wheelchair dies after being struck by car in Fortville

Officers at the scene tell 13News the male victim was crossing the street in the 600 block of North Madison Street in a wheelchair when he was struck by a vehicle.

FORTVILLE, Ind. — Police in Fortville are on the scene of a crash that left a pedestrian dead Monday night.

Officers at the scene tell 13News the male victim was crossing the street in the 600 block of North Madison Street in a motorized wheelchair when he was struck by a southbound vehicle. Investigators believe the man was in the middle of the intersection of North Madison and Illinois streets when he was struck.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say the driver of the vehicle that struck the man stayed at the scene. She was taken to Hancock Regional Hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Drugs or alcohol are not suspected to be a factor in the crash.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing. Police said the woman who was driving the car has been cooperating with their investigation.
