Madison County Wednesday opened its first needle exchange site.
It's intended to combat the growing Hepatitis C epidemic caused by drug users sharing needles. The county will eventually run four sites - two in Anderson and one each in Elwood and Alexandria.
The address of the sites will not be made public. The health department.. will refer people individually.
This is the second needle exchange opened in the state, following Scott County. Health officials there are dealing with the largest HIV outbreak in state history. It's also linked to sharing needles.
Several other counties have either asked the state for permission to start needle exchanges or are considering it.
