Local Indianapolis businesses celebrate Small Business Saturday

Shoppers lined up outside Kristin Kohn's business, Silver in the City, hours before it opened on Small Business Saturday.

INDIANAPOLIS — When local businesses on Mass Ave opened their doors for Small Business Saturday, shoppers rushed in to get their hands on the best holiday deals. Business owners like Kristin Kohn have spent all year getting their stores ready for this day.

"It's a huge day for local businesses, it's usually our biggest day of the year," she said.

Shoppers lined up outside Kohn's business, Silver in the City, hours before it opened. Kohn has been on Mass Ave for years and says Small Business Saturday let's her connect with new and returning shoppers.

Like many local businesses, Silver in the City sells items that aren't always sold at big name stores. Kohn says those unique pieces from all the businesses on the street make it what it is today.

"What makes this a strong community is that there are so many small locally owned businesses," she said. "You've got shops, coffee, bars and restaurants and they are all unique to our neighborhood."

Brittany Faulkner works and lives near many of those local businesses. She said while she goes to them often, Small Business Saturday lets first-time shoppers immerse themselves into this community.

"It's wonderful to have people out supporting and introduced to why we love this city so much," she said.

While one day is dedicated to shopping locally, Kohn hopes this encourages people to shop locally even after the holiday season.
