Lawsuit: Purdue student alleges negligence after being injured trying to buy basketball tickets in 2023

The lawsuit alleges Purdue knew or should have known that the large crowd could be dangerous.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A Purdue student injured while attempting to buy basketball tickets is now suing the school over their injuries.

According to the recently filed lawsuit, on Feb. 5, 2023 at 8:30 a.m., the plaintiff in the lawsuit was waiting in line to enter Mackey Arena alongside "thousands" of students gathered to purchase tickets to a men's basketball game in the student section

The lawsuit claims the doors to Mackey Arena were rumored to be opened at noon. That's when an "uncontrolled mob of people" pushed forward from all around the victim, making it hard for them to move.

The plaintiff alleges that they were pushed onto their back right side, which resulted in their left leg collapsing and their foot rolling, causing a fracture in their left foot.

The lawsuit alleges that Purdue either knew or should have known the large number of people attempting to enter Mackey Arena could become dangerous and chaotic to members of the crowd. The plaintiff claims they suffered a "non-displaced fracture of their fifth metatarsal bone of their left foot, which required surgical repair, and a stress fracture of their left third metatarsal."

According to the lawsuit, the plaintiff is seeking compensation for all of their losses, damages, injuries and court costs.
